Hallo Carl,
von der Logik her hast Du sicher Recht. Nur ist das ganze anders gewachsen. Zuerst wurde die float-Variable entwickelt. Und die wird auch meist noch so bezeichnet. Und deren Übersetzung war dann eben "Fließkommazahl - Anzahl der Nachkommastellen nicht vorgegeben".
Dann kam jemand mit einer Zahl um die Ecke, die genug Speicher für eine genauere Fließkommazahl hatte. Also eben die doppelte Gemauigkeit. Und die wurde dann schlicht DOUBLE genannt.
Aus heutiger sicht schon richtig: SINGLE-Variable und DOUBLER-Variable. Auf jeden Fall ist das besser als "Fließkommazahl" und "Doppelt".
