56K is actually a bit of a misnomer since it's asymmetric. A 56K modem is actually 33.6K download and 28.8K upload. That's why people switching from 56K PSTN connections to 64K ISDN connections (which are symmetric) noticed such a marked difference. I can't believe I still remember all this, I haven't had to support PSTN services for at least 8 years.
