Leaving all that political and emotional stuff (to do or not to do) aside:
What would be relatively easy is to replace the download button the
user clicked on with a donate-button.

hmm... nice approach, indeed. :-)
Alternatively, maybe the download button could open two windows, one with
the download URL, another one with a donation request?
While this is technically possible, please note that opening an
additional, not explicitly requested window is far more "aggressive"
than changing the in-page content.
You don't like popup-ads, do you? New windows aren't that much
different from popups from my POV.
http://jsfiddle.net/Dv4ex/1/ opening two URLs & modifying the button
http://jsfiddle.net/Dv4ex/2/ just opening two URLs, leaving the button as-is.
Note that opening the Download will not create a new window, but
rather initialize the download - some browsers might create a new
tab/window just to close it again once they notice it is a file to
download, but the user will not have to manually close that window.
This is of course different when opening the donation page in
addition, this will create a new window/tab that the user needs to
manually close. I personally wouldn't like it.
I also don't see how this would make it clear(er) that the donation is
not related to downloading.
ciao
Christian
