For the time being, I would avoid announcements of betas outside the announce@ mailing list (which has over 7000 subscribers, many of them journalists). Any other channel would make these announcements look as "official", while we are still trying to improve the quality.

Informing the local community in order to get help in the QA process is OK. Informing the press, in my opinion, is not yet appropriate, unless we know and trust the editors (but I would be very cautious anyway: I have never announced betas).
