But your question is relevant indeed.

We plan to do the beta builds as dev builds, so they will be installed
in parallel with the stable release.

Though, the release candidates are going to replace the stable releases
on Windows and MAC.

euh... on Mac you never actually need to install it. I usually happily
run it from the mounted dmg, without bothering drag-and-dropping it in
the Application folder.

So, regardless of the build mode, on Mac it is quite possible to test
without messing the previous 'install' AFAIK
