I don't want to rain on your parade but (as a UX practitioner of 20 yrs),
surveys are almost the least effective means to validate a UI design,
especially if UI behaviour is included in the investigation. A dozen face
to
face interviews supported by static or even active prototypes, conducted
with
a variety of users would yield much more useful and reliable results.
I also think surveys' success rely on the sample/target audience. Most
LibreOffice users don't read the websites like OMG Ubuntu. They may not be
reading any technical websites at all. So, what we get is those over
enthusiastic users, who just want a new 'bing' factor. They will start
looking for something new the next well. Comparing to Windows these are the
users who want to add Dock/change theme every now and then and play as much
as they can -- they don't represent -- real/majority - of users. They just
represent the users who are loud. Unity is being dislikes so much that most
seasoned users are switching to Linux Mint. These were also the users who
helped popularisation of Ubuntu via install fests.
So, how to reach such 'serious' LibreOffice users? Some times surveys or
stories on such sites mislead the direction as the developers get over
excited by the comments from the loud readers who fall in the same category
of the ones who want to do every possible crazy thing on their window
machine -- add a dock, get crazy theme, crazy fonts and what not.
So, how are we going to talk to the average LibreOffice user?
here is a proposal. I hate it I don't have any better idea : a popup on
libreoffice asking to feel the survey.
I don't think we want a Unity/Global Menu mess in Libreoffice.
personnaly i love global menu. And it have been tested by user testing not
by survey :D. I'm sure a survey would have helped make unity more "geek
friendly" by explaining what options are wanted.
