Hi Andrew, all!
Just a quick update ... Sébastien mentioned on the developer list that
there are now document shadows for Impress and Draw. I think that this
is the work by the OOo guys who do these improvements along with others
for Project Renaissance. Besides this good message (a good coverage of
pleasing shadows within the applications), the style varies ...

Looks good Christoph, however I still don't like that the shadow is
off-centre. Whilst I can see that using the Tango guidelines, you came
to a logical conclusion, because strictly this is not an icon, I don't
think it should apply.
Okay, two weeks (or so) passed by and I'll have a look at the shadows
again ... but please let me explain why I think the Tango Guidelines
apply. Disclaimer / hope: Not meant to start a huge debate, but to
explain my rationale ... it may still be that I'm wrong.
During the last years, user interfaces got a bit more "depth" ...
leading to gradients and shadows (for example). To be "authentic" to the
user, this requires to present it like it will look in the real world.
For icons and symbols, 3D effects have been used since a long time,
because they have to visualize (complex) metaphors. So the designers
needed a guideline quite early ... this led to the general "lightning
from top" nearly all desktops consider today.
But - having consistency in mind - this also applies to the rest of the
desktop and its programs. At least the "top lighting" should be
considered, the "slightly to the left" might be debatable ;-)
Ah, by the way, I had a look at different programs - so just for
information:
* MSO 2007 (Word) --> shadow bottom right
* LibO 3.4 (Impress) --> shadow centered, slightly moved towards
bottom
* MSO 2010 (Word) --> shadow centered, slightly moved towards
bottom, other applications seem to differ (e.g. Visio)
* MSO 2011 Mac --> shadow centered (looks strange on the pictures
I saw, but also introduces another shadow for the document
viewport)
[...]
Thanks for doing this,
Thanks for the discussion - I'd like to come to a final version very
soon, to not delay Sébastiens work (too much).
Cheers,
Christoph
