I'm going to try to create a disc and order one from Kunaki to see how it goes. I'll download the iso. Can you send jpg or png copies of the labels (or links to ftp or folder share if too big). My email is cswalsh@gmail.com. Chris Walsh 301-646-9065 cswalsh@gmail.com On Wed, Jan 1, 2014 at 5:02 PM, Kracked_P_P---webmaster < webmaster@krackedpress.com> wrote:
When someone I know was looking at Kunaki last year[?], there was a problem. I tried to order a single DVD and they wanted to charge me a lot more money that "advertised" for a single copy of the DVD. It looked like a "low volume fee" type of deal. If we can get the "advertised" price for a single DVD when a user wants to order it, plus a reasonable shipping cost, then I would love to have some print-on-demand service make and send the DVDs to the users directly. I could supply the .iso file, or someone in the LO "chain of command" could do it. [My bandwidth is rather low at times.] Then get the direct link to the DVD and list it several places. Then let the users order it from the company directly via that link. It would be interesting to get the DVD from a NY State company, since Lulu.com ships the LO book[s] out in my area from a NYS address. Well Chris, how easy is it to get the DVD creation "process" started and "such"? I have the .iso file, and the label for 4.1.4 [included within the .iso file]. Would there be a need for any other user provided "files"? I do not think we would need anything more than a jewel case, if a better case cost more. Actually, I just give the DVD out in a black jewel case with maybe some sheets like the brochure, depending on the person. The label could be modified to say that the DVD will actually auto-run [asks to] into your default browser, in Windows based systems. I have the master Inkscape file[s] that I just modify the version number to make the new JPG files for the label printing software that my printer[s] use. Actually the original image[s] are 2000 by 2000 pixels PNG/JPG/SVG files. That resolution prints well for my printers, but could have the resolution increased for a "better" media printing system. The DVD has the 2000 pixel JPG image in two "styles", since I have used two different media with different printable areas. I like the full coverage "filled" version, but sometimes it is hard to get that media in a good burning speed. My last batch of full coverage printable media was only 8x speed, while I usually try to use 16x+ burning speed DVD media. Personally, if the DVD gets made by these print-on-demand companies, I would add a few dollars to the "cost" and use that as a donation fund-raiser for LO. Every dollar or two would help, right? I've used them with no problem, and I have a friend who uses them all the time for indie film deliveries. They burn data as well as movie files. When you add shipping via US Mail, the total per disc is around $5 (US only). $1 dollar for the disc and $ 4.30 for shipping. I like that Kunaki would always be available, they even offer a publish-at-no-cost solution, which would let people order directly from Kunaki. Alternatively, I do have replicator and printer at home, and am willing to fill in short term for small orders. Hope you improve asquickly as possible. All, this may be a good incentive for us to investigate commercial services that will burn, label, and ship single or multiple DVDs. For example, http://www.publishmymedia.com/index.html (Note: I know nothing about that particular service and have never used them; it's just an example of what's available.) No doubt some, or most, charge too much in upfront (setup) costs to be viable, but worth investigating I think. If I have time over the next few weeks, I'll investigate it myself. --Jean I think some of these print on demand services we looked into and thecosts were not good for the single disc ordering. But that was lastyear,Also, every few months we have a new version of LO to deal with for aDVD.Right now, the 4.1.x line is ready[?] to take over the distribution ofLOfrom the "stable" 4.0.6 version of the DVD. At least that is what itlookslike on the "lists". So if we make a print-on-demand service DVDavailablefor 4.1.4, it will be replaced by 4.1.5 or 4.1.6? As for just burning the DVD and handing them out. . . . Well, that is a good thing to do for friends, but for businesses you need something more professional looking. The DVD contains the label artwork so after you download the DVD .iso file, you can burn the DVD onto printable mediaandthen use your media printing "printer" to print the "professionallooking"label. You can get a Canon printer that prints onto CDs and DVDs forunder$100 USD.
