Also as there have been no people screaming "nooooo! - how could you
f'k up the download page that much" but rather "coool!" - the switch
to the new-style download is now complete

I have just joined the mailing list and registered on Nabble purely to
express my personal "nooooo! - how could you f'k up the download page that
much" :-)

Having read this thread, it's clear that you have plans to make the download
page as easy as it used to be (i.e. all options available in one place, no
need to click to three different pages just to change rpm -> deb).

Also, Christoph Noak's mock-ups look good, approaching the simplicity of the
old design.

However, with the greatest respect to the web team, I'd suggest that this
explicitly half-finished new design should not have been released until it
matched the old functionality. Was there any rush for release?

I have looked at the critical comments about the Download page on the wiki
(information design section). It seems to me that those comments were
directed at the choices of content displayed on the page (versions,
placement, extraneous text, etc). Those comments were quite valid.

However, the changes instituted so far have gone further than dealing with
the content to changing the actual functionality/interaction involved in
downloading LO and, in my opinion, have been to the detriment of user
experience. If there's other documentation elsewhere about why certain
changes have been made and such, then I apologise for not having found them.

To reference your comment about the initial feedback received: the effort
involved in being able to give feedback is a separate issue to raise - I
mean, how many casual users are going to register on a mailing list and a
forum just to be able to say, "The new way isn't better, bring back the old
way"? :-) It's possible that since participants in these fora are
predominantly people with an active interest in the development of the
website - i.e. change/progress - that dissenting/conservative voices will be
under-represented.

That said, I don't like popping up somewhere just to be the nay-sayer; I
hope my comments are taken with the positive and appreciative attitude in
which they are intended!
