Well, AFAIK mail lists have several limitations:

A mail list is not optimized for issue-tracking, which was how we started.
It cannot settle a multi-party argument (like this one) well (Compare with a concept map or
argument map).
It cannot summarize the discussion (the topics lie scattered over multiple posts, buried under >>>>
symbols.)
The topics cannot be (-or is not-) organized hierarchically on the server side.
Each user would have to create his own hierarchy.

So mostly we have to build a picture in our head and reproduce it any time it is needed.
Unfortunately this is a time-waster.

That's why we have wiki, forum, Concept-mapper and issue-tracker to serve those needs.

Of course, any tool can be used imaginatively for other purposes, but with more pain.

I have not seen a good article on how to maximally utilize mail lists (e.g. with other online
services or clients).
That may be the reason why I do not know much about this.
Probably someone should do that, considering a lot of newcomers would e facing the same issue.

Thanks,
Narayan
