Hi,

With appropriate filters and threading in a modern mail client
(like Thunederbird) most of the advantages of a forum can be
egalized by a mailing list.

Moreover, as a subscriber to mailing lists, you handle all the
messages through one single user interface (your mail client), even
when you take part in many different projects. Whereas a forum user
would have to visit several locations in the web in order to check
and see new messages, that are of interest.

... and to wait endless time for every single HTML page to load (as in
my case with slow internet)

So if you want to integrate all members of the community on an equal or
nearly equal level, you have to choose the medium with the widest
spread, the most simple technique, and the least bandwith overhead.

BTW: We should take this one into the Newbie-FAQ for community members
as it has been asked often by inexperienced people.
