I solved it the old fashioned way, but before that it got worse.  I started
having the same issue with LibreOffice documents that hadn't been opened at
all within the past month.

Therefore, I deleted the application, support files and preferences and
reinstalled.  The problem went away.

I'm reasonably sure that this issue was created by migrating all my system
information from one Mac to another new Mac using Apple's Migration
Assistant.
