You can delete the desktop shortcut as well. Rite click select delete.

But the question remains
*WHY* was it put there in the first place?
Because i know i can delete it ;-)

Would you rather it be hidden deep on the hard drive somewhere that you
can
not find it to delete it? Where would you suggest that it be placed?

The desktop shortcut is pretty standard, and can be avoided with a
checkbox,
but the installation folder, where the installer inflate itself to really
install the app could be located in the temp folder, and deleted after
installation; at least on windows it's the most usual way to install
software, instead of dropping the installer on the desktop.

And the checkbox, to put the icon on the desktop, should default to NOT
checked.

I mean, 99.999% of the time when i do something with 'office', its an
attachment i open directoly frm mail, of a document from the 'my
documents'folder.
Almost NEVER do i need to check the 'start menu' fro a link to start
'office/writer' to create a new document....

The default state of the checkbox is more open to discussion; personnaly,
I'd agree with the default being not checked, because I usually can't reach
shortcuts on my desktop anyway; but there is a (probably large?) part of the
user that are somewhat lost when their favorite applications are not
available directly on the desktop, and those users tend to be less attentive
during installation (if they are doing them at all).

All in all, it all come down to a minor annoyance, that is unchecking a box
one time only (unless the icon is added back on update, I don't remember the
behavior we had before about updates).
