and difficult to install, Xcode

That is nothing I can comment on...

Well, at least during the Hamburg hack-fest (a bit over a month ago),
it was found that to install Xcode 3 on a current MacOSX 10.7 one
needs for instance to set the system time back some months because the
certificate used for the digital signature of the package has
expired... But maybe that has been fixed and a better Xcode 3 package
is available now that installs without problems on 10.7?

What about just adding autoconf and automake into the
build-dependencies, with autogen.sh calling "make autotools" if those
are not found?

I am not awfully enthusiastic... but if you submit a sane patch for
it, why not...

(We should have started a new thread for this discussion that is not
much related to Iain's GSoC any more...)
