Evolving a code-base is unpleasant, because you have to deal with somebody else's dirty code, which always feels worse than dealing with your own.
But it makes for a healthier project.

yes, and what a complete disaster that re-write was for Mozilla --
imagine how much of the market Firefox would have today if they had
stuck with the unmaintainable Netscape 4 codebase!
