I think the best solution here would be to change the LibO hsqldb code, 
to call Attach/DetachCurrentThread rarely rather than frequently, but 
according to Ocke Janssen (who used to maintain that code) that was no 
easy option.


Maybe this is the time to give the sqlite3 backend a try. There was some
interest during LO Conference to work on it. Not sure how it will
translate to an actual achievement, but maybe we could try to tap those
resources to get off hsqldb and compulsory java for Base.
