I've just found the time to finish this mock-up for the Styles and
Formatting window. It can be found here, please have a look:
Hi! Nice work! It looks, indeed, better than the current.
My comments:
I think "Apply direct formatting to this style" will be a source of
trouble and confusion. How about adding a "d" or some icon at the leftmost
part of each style name if it has this checkbox enabled? (I am not saying
you should remove the checkbox). Something like:
+ Heading d
Heading1
Heading2
- direct access to "style properties dialog";
I didn't find that, what icon was that?
- list of applied styles (indicating whether they're actual styles, and
the type of them, or direct formatting, in which case there's a thorough
list of formatting applied, and a button to reset (same as Ctrl+M);
I liked that.
- preview!
Am I correct to assume the sample format in the middle part belongs to the
style, and not the current position?
I would like to have buttons to hide the preview and the formatting
inspector. Rationale: The S&F window can be docked, and that's how I use
it because it is more comfortable. I dock it to the left. On the top I put
the S&F window and on the bottom I put the navigator. This pretty much
leaves really tight space for each panel.
Also, what does the checkbox mean on the "Direct formatting: " part at the
bottom? Considering you already have a Reset button, what happens if you
check/uncheck the box? (I was thinking I'd drop it.)
Best regards!
