Are you using the "default" folder/file sharing on the Ubuntu 11.04 
machine, or did you add the SAMBA server package over top of the default 
system?

I use Ubuntu 10.04LTS.  I set up the shared folder using only the 
"default" settings, allowing it to install the needed software 
packages.  I have saved a LO document onto a Vista laptop from the 
Ubuntu desktop and I have saved a LO document onto the Ubuntu desktop's 
shared folder from the Vista laptop.  It works both ways for me.

I found that manually adding the SAMBA server over top of the default 
setting that allow network sharing of a folder on the Ubuntu 10.04LTS 
[64 bit] drives caused me some issues.  I set the folder to allow full 
access by all users to read and write files to that shared folder.  I 
did notice that some rare times the shared folder on the drive that 
Ubuntu is installed on could not be accessed by my friend's Win 7 
laptop.  Yet the shared folder on my second physical drive worked fine.  
Never had this issue with my Vista laptop.

I am not using Ubuntu 11.04 due to issues with monitor resolution 
issues, which hopefully will be worked out later.

To be honest, my network is private and no one has access to it, except 
a few aide who work next door for my neighbor who needs 24/7 care.  They 
use secured wireless access.  They need password access to get to 
anything except the created shared folders on the Ubuntu desktop.  But 
if you are going to have a business setup where you have a work folder 
on a central server that you save your documents to, that may be an 
issue, or not.  I have not used "true file server" settings for several 
years.
