Hi,

How many moderators are there? What is the average number of real non
spam signups per month, it can't be that high. Plus the people who
signup would need a reason to want to signup, which would be one of the
questions a moderator would ask.
I received word that the QuestyCaptcha should be a very good solution to
the problem: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:QuestyCaptcha
So, if we come up with some senseful questions that interested users can
answer, but bots cannot, this might be an easy way out.
Otherwise, I think we have about 10-20 wiki admins, but can easily add
more. However, I really would like to have the entry barrier as low as
possible, so if we switch to manual account creation, we should only
refuse those looking like spam.
Another idea I could investigate is to simply delete all
non-emailconfirmed users, which might be doable with a simple database
query...
