Seems to be a problem with the dialog for saving files in Windows. There isn't shown the file 
extension. So might be
Tools → Options → LibreOffice → General → Use LibreOffice Open/Save dialogs
will help here.

Stupid me --  the option is under File > Save as  and NOT File > Export as.   That in itself is a 
bit of an odd distinction.
