your second method. It's actually 'the rest' of drawing a chart

Once you've selected your data, as above, and done Insert > Chart,
just select XY (Scatter), confirm that Points Only is selected, and
click on Finish. Does that not give you what you want?

I'm afraid not. I've discovvered what's going on though thanks to your
help. What that gives me is the same as I had before, a vertical line
with a few scattered dots. But thanks to your confirmation that my
process was correct, I guessed that it must be the data that was wrong.

So after inspecting the data and correcting a few errors, I finally
have a graph that looks sensible. Thanks for your help.
