Your first problem is that your two data columns are not adjacent.
There are two ways to circumvent this:
o The obvious way: Rearrange your columns or simply copy their data
into other adjacent columns. If you make these copies active (=B3 and
so on), any changes will be carried over.
o Select the two columns *without the intervening column*. To do
this, select one column (or cells) and then hold the Ctrl key down
whilst selecting the other column or cell range. If you then click
the Chart button or use Insert | Chart..., the chart will use the
data you have selected.
Perhaps oddly, I'd managed to somehow select the data columns using
your second method. It's actually 'the rest' of drawing a chart that I
find difficult. :(
The rest should be easy.
