Yes I was hoping the setting in tools/options/calc/general/update

this option set LO crashes big time. In no time the memory used goes

The log says something like this "out of memory".

For your information. I'm running LO 24.8.0.3 under openSUSE Tumbleweed
20240828 x86_64, KDE Plasma 6.1.4 (X11) with 16 GB RAM but without swap.

The same happens with LO 7.6.7.2
Xubuntu here, both 22 and 24, LO 7* and 24*. I just did a little test, sorting, inserting and checking the resulting links. Works fine but with the suggested setting. The RAM memory is ‘small’, I can't get it above several hundred MBs

Is it possible that there are contaminants in the sheet? Large embedded data blocks? OLE stuff?

If I were in your shoes, I would paste the contents to a new sheet in a controlled, metered way to find out where and when it goes wrong. Extracting the ods file and examining it globally is, of course, also an option.
