Is there any other place that fonts can be "installed" to?

I know that Ubuntu has the font location like what you have stated  as "/usr/share/fonts/OTF/"

There is also a hidden dot font folder with Ubuntu.  If there is, try to copy the font there and see if it works.

Can you please tell me why you converted Baker Signet from TTF to OTF,    I never converted any font myself, so I do not know what OTF gives you over the TTF version.

I have used both with Ubuntu since version "9.10", so I never thought about the difference.

Haven't tried it, but I will. Stay tuned ...

Steve,

Yes, it works in The GIMP and the name displayed is Baker Signet.
