Interesting.  Do these techniques not work for others in Impress?
Having inserted a table via Insert > Table, any of Brian's suggestions work for me to delete it in 4.0.4.2 and 4.2.0.4. Admittedly those are not the latest versions. 

It looks like there may be a bug, introduced around 4.2.3.3:
