It might be worth posting a bug report about this issue and mention that

Obviously just reinstall the 3.6.6 or the slightly newer 3.6.7. Within a branch the updates are
just bug-fixes, a little better compatibility with the latest versions of the MS formats and not
much more. Going up a branch adds new features and a fairly large improvement in compatibility
with the latest versions of the MS formats. So, the newer 4.0.x branch probably added something
that interferes with showing the slide. The 3.6.7 doesn't add new features it just fixes a few
things.

This might be an important clue... Upgrading to 4.0.4.2 (from 3.6.6.2) has made things worse: in
4.0.4.2, the "missing"
content appears to be missing even in the slide show view.
