I create ALL tables with

CHARACTER SET latin1 COLLATE latin1_german1_ci
.
This should obviously allow for o-Umlaut etc....
In LO I specify ISO-8859-15/EURO for the codepage within the properties
dialogue for the .odb files.
You are most likely right about the "display glitsch" in both JDBC and ODBS.
And, yes, it seems to happen more under ODBC.
