A quick Google search provides the answer

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/show-or-hide-white-space-in-print-layout-view-HP003072013.aspx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297564

Does anyone know if this feature exists in LO? If not a feature request
could be added ;)

Would be a surprise if there is not a feature request already. At least in the old OOo domain ;-) IIRC, people are advised to use Web layout for this - apparently - mission critical feature.

Regards,

Doesn't the paragraph symbol in the tool bar do this? It shows non-printing characters: space, 'hard' return, 'soft' return, tab, etc. This is can be activated by control-F10, or from the menu as View > Nonprinting characters.

Warmest Regards
David Teague
