Hi :)
Gif is the ancient format (relatively) and is relatively unsophisticated.  Png 
is designed to have all the functionality so that it can take over.  I think Png 
is an Open format whereas Gif is proprietary although that might be a 
simplification.  


Gif might be better for website's logos and easier at the moment but 
sophisticated use of png is the way forwards.  Apparently it's an Open Format 
whereas Gif is proprietary.  I just don't know how to do the colour indexing 
stuff.  I guess it's worth having a quick go at Gif in case it does give a 
better result faster.

PS. Png is also set to take over from Jpg as it also handles larger images 
better and again Jpg is a proprietary format (i think).

For my part, I use png for images with less than 256 colours (indexed 
colours). The screenshots with limited number of colours can be handled 
this way with GIMP (using "image/mode/indexed colours, ...").
It is probably what GIF is doing, indexing colours (and discretizing 
continuous colour ramps), because it is limited to 256 colors. This 
should be a faster method than indexing colours with Gimp. I'll try it.
