What is the recommended approach to use any "nightlies" or other beta

Are you wishing to test PPA versions or LO standard?
If the latter you can install:
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/pre-releases/
That will install to your /opt folder and will not interfere with your
PPA version (meaning they can be run in parallel and at the same time if
you wish).
For the PPA version:
https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ppa
does show a 3.3.1rc1 but I'm not sure that you can install in lucid -
see if it shows up in Synaptic with the PPA enabled.
