Hi,
I usually extract the latest rc or beta onto "Filesystem" as root. Then 
I  cd to the folder and run sudo dpkg -iR DEBS/
This seems to have worked well for me. Since I am on Ubuntu 9.10, the 
PPA doesn't help much.
