I too will be sticking to OOo for a bit.

The troubles in Egypt and elsewhere are perfectly topical, because it's important to find ways of getting modern IT facilities to people who can't always afford to pay much. The same is true in richer countries if like me you're retired. Open source is also a matter of principle.

As I have explained elsewhere, I think office suites have a future. The difficulty with OOo and libreoffice, and open source in general, is that there are too many little bugs (and difficulties with geek-type workarounds) for the approach to be viable for numerous individual users, each of whom has particular requirements. To illustrate, it would be best to give a specific example: the graph (chart) function of the OOo spreadsheet. Here, the core software appears to be powerful and innovative, but I never seem to be able to find the controls I need (for example to create 2 x or y axes). Worse, it doesn't seem possible draw a histogram with an independent variable (a very common requirement).

I guess this reflects a lack of development resources; in rich countries we need to find a way of lobbying politicians responsible for "foreign aid" priorities.

Regards

I would say stick with OOo 3.2 for a bit longer then. These are early days for the first release and we have almost all experienced rapid improvements in the
first few days of many other projects.

Software piracy is rife everywhere.

'Slightly' larger issues are going on in Eygpt and elsewhere right now

Tom :)

While some battle for open programs and formats, many south africans
use pirated software and dont know there are alternatives. i install
open source alternatives for my students, but with the problems i am
having with libre office i cannot reccomend it. it is more than ten
times slower than open office 3.2.1

And Tom, I appreciate English people like you because you know what's

Maybe it's the English culture, I don't know. You live in uk, don't you?

Unbelievable news from Egypt!

Try pinging an Egyptian server today and you apparently get no response.
From
12:34 am today the Egyptian government switched off the internet into or
out of
the country. Some but not many satellite communications and some proxy
servers
are keeping a few things open. Sms is down, twitter is down, facebook is

Lets hope more lives are not lost there!
