Did you try to use 'merge and center cells', this will unmerge the
cells, but the stay centered.... ;(
OO had indeed two options named 'Merge cells'.
LO has and option 'Merge cells', and an option 'Merge and Center cells'
Or you could do this:
assign 'CTRL+G' to 'Merge Cells'
and 'CTRL+SHIFT+G' to 'Merge and Center Cells'
Ctrl+G will merge them (wihout center)
Ctrl+Shift+G will unmerge them
Downside is tha pushing Ctrl+Shift+G at the wrong time, cells get
centered......
