"open letter" sounds as he would have tried to communicate directly
beforehand, at least for the website I don't remember anything like
that. Probably the same for the artwork - commenting from the outside
without being involved..
Regarding his proposed icons: Always much easier to create huge ones
that look nice, but those aren't for real-live use. Unless I see ones
in the range of 20px... And while the globe idea is not bad, he did
choose only to display north america...

personal view, not presented as "facts")...
