The linked thread suggests that this is a bug / not intended to have
gone in GCC 4.7, and that the "right thing" that will be done is bump
the soname?

That for this time around, but still not fututreproof as gcc clearly states:
The ABI is experimental and will eat your kittens, dont use it for anything
serious. So no, we should not default to it.
