In a recent-enough GCC (I don't know if it made 4.6, but anyway I
think it is in Fedora 16), there is a GNU extension to how macro

And this GNU extension is enabled with "-ggdb3"? With "-gdwarf-4"? How
do I see whether it is used?

If you really want to shrink debuginfo, use -gdwarf-4 and
-fdebug-types-section. The former has been in GCC for a while, I
don't remember when the latter was added.

It is not in 4.6.2, in any case.

This also makes gdb use less memory.

That would be useful indeed.
