Ah - yes, I see he has a nice PPC machine somewhere.
This should now work correctly without disabling/hackery (does in
Linux/PPC anyway). I'm sure there are other endian problem in there, but
this should get it working for the parts exercised by the unit tests
(which are vindicated by discovering this nest of horrors)
