Unfortunately not, configure had a moan that GCC 4.2 can not be used
with 10.4u SDK, so will fiddle with ENV settings.
Manually fiddling is only necessary when you already did fiddle :-)
i.e. it should choose 4.0 compiler itself when not explicitly told
otherwise (i.e. no environmentvariables set already)
If version is greater, then it checks for 4.0 and tries to uses that

So you apparently did set some paths or links, so that gcc-4.0 is not
at the same place at the detected compiler.
I myself have a directory in my $PATH where I have symlinks to ccache
for the compilers - maybe you got something similar but miss the
corresponding links for gcc-4.0, etc?
