Hi Juliana and welcome to the team,
happy to have someone experienced in icon design here.

I've never worked on an icon set before and I'm not certain what all this
process entails: please feel free to take the helm.

First of all, we need guidelines for creating Inkscape icons. Could you
have a look at this wiki
page<https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Whiteboards/Flat_icon_set>
and
add to the guidelines?
If we'd like, we could use some Android
icons<http://developer.android.com/design/static/download/action_bar_icons-v4.0.zip>
to
start with, as they're licensed under the Apache License.
