Hi Anurag,
welcome on this list! Great to hear that you might be part of the
"GSOC" :-)

Hello all,
I'm applying for the GSOC this year for the task "implementing
multi-line input bar in Calc". This will involve the input bar to be
multi-line and accommodate the overflow string in a word wrap manner
(similar to MS excel). My mentor is KOhei Yoshida and he suggested me
to write here and get some idea about some existing things which can
be used in this project.
Cool, that's an extremely desired feature from my point-of-view. So
thanks to you and Kohei for going forward ...
Since this task will involve a lot of UI related stuff, I'd like to
know if there is already an implementation in VCL for multi-line text
control ? If so please guide me through the way it has been
implemented and how it can be used in this case.
Also where is the data source pane implemented in the codebase (Since
its common to all the modules, i guess it might be in svx) ? Is it a
custom control ? If so can it be directly used in this case ?
Phew, all these questions are "UI source-code" related, less "UI
behavior and look" related - on this list there are mostly usability
guys, designers and very experienced users. So the answers we can
provide are always related to user needs ... unfortunately, I'm totally
unable to answer code related questions. Here, Kohei and the guys on the
LibreOffice dev list are the right ones. (Sorry for the additional
redirect to another list).
Also if the multi-line input bar is implemented, will it hinder with
the data source pane when both appear simultaneously ?
Mmh, that relates to how it will be implemented. Do you have already an
idea how you want to do that?
What I can tell from experience is, that Microsoft started to change the
behavior of the multi-line input within the last versions ... usually,
this is an indicator that there have been issues for users. For example:
A multi-line edit that hides content (of the spreadsheet) is one of the
most annoying things ... so we'll have to be careful how to provide that
feature. And (as always) there are numerous ideas how to do that.
So my question to you: Would you like to think about a possible
implementation first (to us, that means what the user will see), or may
we suggest you something in advance? Or do you want to get used to the
code - to get an idea how much changes are possible? In any case, we'd
like to help you to bring a very good solution to our users.
Thanks and regards.
Same from my side!
Cheers,
Christoph
