I don´t know the reason why most open source software use mailing
lists to keep up the development (i´m sure there´s a good one), but
for graphic related subjects, where we need to see and work with
images this seems a somewhat week solution. Maybe it´s well suited
for programmers but it´s definitely not for designers.

It's mainly about having everything in one place, messages coming to you, instead of having to visit a bunch of sites, bother with lots of accounts.

The fact that forums tend to have email notification features should tell you something about the maturity and completeness of that approach ;)
