[us-marketing] LinuxFest NorthWest Report

 Just got back from LinuxFest NortWest (LFNW).  Most people had very
positive responses to LibreOffice.  A few didn't know what it was or how
it differs from OpenOffice; Most of these were mainly Windows users;
strange to see them at a Linux conference.  
  Here are some problems mentioned by some people:
  Updating/installing on Windows painful for people with low-bandwidth
connections such as dialup because of the size of the file (~200M).
Several people mentioned wanting to have incremental updates instead of
having to download and install the full installation file (one mentioned
this was done in OpenOffice from the help menu).  They're not able to
post to the mailing lists as they have little or no internet access so
I'm reporting this for them (should I cross post this to the user
mailing list?).
  Several people mentioned having problems opening .docx or .pptx files
that they downloaded off the internet (I guess there's quite a few of
them out there now :-( ).  I was wondering (since I didn't see this on
the website) if there was a place to email documents that don't open in
LibreOffice so developers can look at them?  I just told them to post
them to the mailing list but I notice that attachments usually get
stripped on the mailing lists I'm on (development, discussion).
  On the enhancement side, several people mentioned being able to do
'collaboration' over the internet (or a network) where a group of people
can actively edit a document in real time (something I believe Google
apps can do?).  Actually one person mentioned being "more like Google
apps" but it sounded like all he wanted was some sort of file sharing
whereby people would be notified of changes to certain documents (not
sure if this is something we need to address).  One person wanted better
database connectivity (felt it was "too complex" to connect to an
external database).
  One person kept going on about the progress bar on the splash screen
in Linux 'not being in the center of the splash screen'.  It interesting
what will tick people off but I thought I mentioned it.

   I had a good time doing this and wouldn't mind doing this in the
future (it's rather nice to get out and meet people; I don't often get a
chance being way too busy).  Next time, I'll remember to bring
CD's/DVD's and more brochures (we ran out of these half way through the
convention).
  I should point out that O'Reilly's OSCON is in Portland in July 25-29.
If you need me to do a table for that, I'm willing to do it (on the
other hand it may be too late to get a table).
