What do you use MS Office suite for? What version do you use?
I myself have dumped MSO for several years at this point. For
Spreadsheet and Word Processing using .doc and .xlt files, I
prefer to use LibreOffice. You can read and write these files
easily. LibreOffice also has a Presentation module that works
well with the Power Point file I have needed to edit. For the
database work, I am not the one to talk to since I rarely do
any of that, so you will need to get someone else to walk you
through what Base can do for you instead of using MS Access.
Since you currently have over 30 desktops and laptops with MSO
installed [most likely] you can install LibreOffice on any new
computers instead of buying a MSO license. Then you can
install LibreOffice on your other computers, one at a time as
you get time to do this. The great part about LibreOffice is that
you can read/write MSO files so if some of your personnel and
most of your clients use MSO, the other can still use LibreOffice
to edit those MSO files.
As for the Linux servers, well they are usually cheaper than using
MS Server OS. So do not worry. Just to let you know, LibreOffice
runs on more computer platforms, like Linux, that MS Office does:
Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, and some other platforms. I run it
on Windows Vista laptop and a Linux [Ubuntu] desktop. Each
version looks and runs the same to me.
Feel free to download and install LibreOffice on a few computers.
Use it for some time to see how it goes. No need to uninstall MSO
at this point. Once you decide that you like LibreOffice, then you
can faze out MSO over time. That is what I tell my clients I support
in Central New York State.
