For now, OpenID is the only mechanism available for logging-in to the
Ask site. I just put some more information on this wiki page:

If you trust Ubuntu/Canonical, I suggest that you get an OpenID
account via Launchpad -- that's usually the most freedom-loving,
no-cost OpenID provider I've found:
