It´s not broken. It´s working as designed. However, one could

The search field looks only for a pages with a name, that matches
your term. If a page of your term does not exist, you can create it.
This I'd not call a search function, but a "go to" function.
The search symbol then should be replaced.

seen in other wikis by default. (if "goto" does not match)
