I assume Microsoft did spend some money on research on the acceptance of the ribbon or the
start menu of "Windows 8'. They transition did have some bumps and there were some tweaks.. but
the didn't go back to before.
Microsoft spent a huge amount of time, money and effort when designing this
interface. I think you will see this if you watch a little of the design
philosophy that went in to this and the effort undertaken. It certainly
wasn't just thrown together.
