Since a while I use the fodt format, to be able to process their content
with both Writer and external tools.

When an existing file is modified with Writer, and new text is added
or existing text is replaced, a new style is created for the modified
section. The existing style is for some reason not reused. As a result
it becomes difficult to modify the document further with external tools.

Is there a way to merge redundant style sections into their parent?

As an example, creating a new document with two words, save it, reopen
it and add another two words leads to the apparently redundant "T1" style:

<text:p text:style-name="Text_20_body">Lorem <text:span text:style-name="T1">foo bar</text:span>
ipsum.</text:p>

Thanks,
Olaf
