[libreoffice-users] Writer file increase in size

I just reworked an old document written in Writer five years' ago. My intention was to replace all 
the images with new ones.

There are 69 png images in the doc and all are black and white line drawings saved, at the time, in 
RGBA format with transparency. The replacement images are pngs saved in grayscale without 
transparency. Without exception, each replacement image is smaller than the original. The original 
images totalled 5.49 MiB and the replacements 3.89 Mib.

My replacement procedure was to delete an image and then insert its replacement, check its anchor, 
wrap alignment and size to be identical to the original, and then pass on to the next image ... etc.

The old document was 4.7 MiB with its original images and I expected the new document to be 
smaller. Instead, it is now 8.1 MiB. It has gained 3.4 MiB which is close to the overall size of 
the new images.

Does this mean that the odt document retains all the old history including the original images?  
I'd like to get back to something smaller than the original 4.7 MiB so would welcome ideas for 
pruning it back without rewriting from scratch.
