I started this reply last night while waiting for my Doctor's 
appointment, so hope I have'nt missed something that I'm now duplicating.

Before you go any further, did you make the AppImage executable?

At this point I generally cd into to dir where the LO appimage is being 
used. Then

sudo chmod a+x LibreOffice-fresh.full-x86_64.AppImage

Then whilst still there, run the app like

./LibreOffice-fresh.full-x86_64.AppImage

Later, you can add the app to your start up list using the 
/full/path/to/LibreOffice-fresh.full-x86_64.AppImage
