Jonathan -
When you double-click, the character is inserted immediately and you stay in the Special Characters
dialogue, so you can then just double-click the next character(s). When you're done, you click on
Cancel to exit from the dialogue. At least that's what's happening for me in LO 7.3.2.2.

Now I have to double click each character (and vowel-point/accent)
in turn, then re-enter Insert Special Character. Not a clever choice.
